Everybody is talking about Internet fraud. The fact of the
matter is that we use phone lines every day to authorize credit card purchases. At the
department store, gas station, restaurant and even here at 8th Street Tailor.
According to Mike Homer, the vice-president of Netscape: "We have had over eight
million customers doing business for over a year now on the internet. During that time
we've never had a report of any of our customers' information being stolen."
FACT: In the unlikely
event that your credit card number is stolen, by federal law you are only liable for a
maximum of $50 in charges.
FACT: Using a credit
card to place an order via the Web is far more secure than giving the same card to a
waiter in a restaurant or an attendant at a gas station.
FACT: Web transactions
leave no paper trail for thieves to pick out of garbage cans.
FACT: It is far easier
for a thief to tap your phone line and listen to your conversations than it is to steal
your card number during a Web transaction.
